After Hip Replacement Surgery

Performing exercises after a surgery for hip replacement will aid in your recovery and healing. The type of exercises performed can make or break your healing process, thus, it is vital that you consult your doctor and physical therapist, especially prior to surgery, regarding the proper exercise plan for you. Perform the suggested exercises prior to surgery as these will help strengthen your hip and legs, speeding your recovery.

Know when the right moment to start your exercise routine after surgery is. In many cases, the physical therapist will help you with the exercises a day after surgery. Continue to cooperate with the physical therapist at least one or two days a week, as recommended. He will also be able to update your exercise plan, adding new routines when necessary. He will also check whether or not you are properly executing the exercises.

You can try these easy-to-do exercises.

• Lie with back on the floor and extend legs. Slide one heel to your buttocks then extend legs once again. Repeat on other side and as often as requested by therapist.

• Lie with back on the floor and extend legs. Push toes up and down slowly, contracting and relaxing your foot muscles.

• Lie with back on the floor and extend legs. Tighten buttock and thigh muscles. Hold for about 10 second then relax. Repeat as often as requested by therapist.

• Put towel or pillow under your knee then lift heel until parallel with floor. Hold for about 10 seconds and bring back to normal position to relax.

• Sit on chair with feet flat on floor. Lift one leg up, hold position and return slowly to normal position. Repeat on other leg.

These are just some simple exercises you can do during the first few days after surgery. Your therapist can add more when needed.
